A LIFETIME OF SERVICE & LEADERSHIP

Brett Barkey is a Marine veteran who brings 30 years of public service and leadership to Colorado government.

A fourth-generation Coloradan, Brett has served in the Marine Corps, in the US Treasury Department, and as a twice-elected District Attorney in Northwest Colorado.  Brett retired as a Colonel from the Marine Corps Reserve after 25 years of service, which included three tours in Iraq. He is proud to have been in public service virtually his entire career.

Brett currently resides west of Steamboat Springs with his wife, Jennifer, and their two dogs, Maddie and Scout.

FROM BRETT: WHY I SERVE

Following my parents’ example, I serve to make a difference, using whatever talents God has given me and the resources at hand to leave things better than I found them. It begins with small things like picking up a piece of trash instead of stepping over it, and making that a habit. That habit can turn into a lifetime in service -- as a U.S. Treasury Department official helping stop the flow of funds to terrorists, as a prosecutor fighting for justice for victims, and as a Marine defending our nation.

My second tour in Iraq seared the importance of service even more deeply into my being. I was in a convoy and my truck was hit by an RPG – but it did not detonate. God’s grace gave me a life, when so many young Americans were not as fortunate. I am driven to service as a way to honor the legacy of those who did not come home.

A fitting next chapter for me would be to stand watch over Colorado’s financial resources as State Treasurer. I would make the office a center of service to county, municipal, and special district treasurers. The office would be the “go-to” expert in financial management for the legislature and Governor. The office would efficiently and expeditiously return unclaimed properties to their rightful owners.

My family has served Coloradans for four generations as legislators, teachers, and civic volunteers. I intend to continue that service to honor them, my fellow veterans, and our wonderful state.
